Traditional Techniques for Cervical Disc Decompression: An Overview

Cervical disc decompression is a surgical procedure that aims to alleviate pressure on the nerves in the cervical spine. Traditional techniques for cervical disc decompression include:

• Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF): In this procedure, the affected disc is removed through a small incision in the front of the neck, and a bone graft is placed in its location to fuse the adjacent vertebrae.
• Posterior cervical laminectomy: This procedure involves removing a portion of the bone at the back of the neck to create more space for the affected nerve roots.

While these traditional techniques have been successful in providing pain relief for many patients, they do have some drawbacks. Both ACDF and posterior cervical laminectomy require general anesthesia and may require a lengthy recovery period. Additionally, these techniques can result in decreased range of motion and potentially long-term effects on the health of the spine.
